Amargosa Valley, Nevada, boasts a history stretching back thousands of years, from ancient human settlements to its modern-day development. Initially inhabited by Native Americans, including the Southern Paiute and Western Shoshone, the area saw white settlers arrive in the 19th century, drawn by mining opportunities and ranching possibilities. The valley, named for the Amargosa River, experienced booms and busts related to mining and later, the Nevada Test Site (now the Nevada National Security Site), before establishing itself as a largely unincorporated community in the late 20th century.

Dayton, Nevada, is one of Nevada's earliest settlements, famously known for being the site of the state's first gold discovery in 1849 by Abner Blackburn. Initially a stopover for travelers heading to the California goldfields, it evolved into a mining and milling center, particularly after the Comstock Lode discovery in 1859. Dayton served as the first county seat of Lyon County and holds a rich history as a commercial hub and transportation center.
The 19th-century mining bonanza that turned Virginia City into the most important industrial city between Denver and San Francisco, was the result of the Comstock Lode. A rich deposit of silver ore discovered by Henry Comstock, part-owner of the property on which it was discovered, in June 1859. Getting his nickname for only making pancakes for breakfast, Henry T. “Pancake” Comstock was referred to as one of the original finders of gold in Gold Canyon, just south of Virginia City. Comstock was said to have been lazy, employing American Indians on his claims, and was a fast-talker. Since he was on the scene of the original findings, his name stuck almost instantly.
